* The National singer Matt Berninger (pictured at left; photo by David Greenwald) tells Pitchfork the band’s May-due — but still unfinished — new album is “a meaner record… it’s less restrained than Boxer… there’s a lot of yelling.” Exactly what I wanted to hear! But Matt also revealed he’s a new dad and the band is unlikely to keep up their history of endless road-dogging on their upcoming tours (not that they should have to), so see ‘em when you can.
* You Ain’t No Picasso has the bootleg from Radiohead’s Haiti charity show from last week, where they played the best setlist ever.
* The Numero Group has put together what looks like an exhaustive history in song of Chicago recording studios, 1908 – 1980. Download it here.
Tonight’s epic Radiohead setlist from their Henry Fonda gig, via LA Weekly, after the jump. L.A.’s new hometown heroes raised over $500,000 for charity. Send over your pictures/videos! Read the rest of this entry »

Per Rock is a Girl’s Best Friend, Thom Yorke’s Haiti charity appearance last night at the Roosevelt was a DJ gig, as he has been doing frequently during his months in L.A. — not a performance. And contrary to Twitter rumors (*shakes fist*), Beck didn’t play, but, uh, Maroon 5 did. Sigh. Still crossing my fingers for some Record Club magic. (Thanks to Ariel)
Update: Radiohead is playing a charity show at the Henry Fonda on Saturday. Really! Get yr tix via auction tonight at 8 p.m.

Do not underestimate Thom Yorke ????, or as I’m calling them, The Thom Band. As confirmed by EW.com, the Radiohead frontman is bringing his solo act (with Flea, Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco) to Coachella. While time hasn’t been kind to Thom’s solo effort, The Eraser, playing it live has — at his trio of L.A. gigs last fall, the onslaught of live percussion and synthesizers ballooned the songs to nearly Radiohead-sized epics. I had the pleasure of hearing the act in action on October 4, 2009; after the jump, you can, too. Read the rest of this entry »

A few weeks ago, I took a walk through West Hollywood late one night, needing to clear my head. I listened to Thom Yorke’s The Eraser — the Radiohead frontman’s all-but-forgotten 2006 debut. I’d loved it at the time, but a few years later, many of the songs seemed more penciled in than inscribed in ink, slight, brittle tracks lacking the widescreen grandeur of Yorke’s day job.
That was before he played them live. In the second of three shows in Los Angeles — his first-ever solo gigs in the city and, as far as I know, his first-ever with a band other than Radiohead — and first stop at the Orpheum, Yorke unleashed an all-star quintet on his Eraser material and beyond. On bass, the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Flea; on drums, Beck usual suspect Joey Waronker; on percussion, David Byrne collaborator Mauro Refosco; on everything else, Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Serious dudes, all. What were once slim electronic beats were transformed and transmogrified into thundering, organic grooves; at times, Nigel joined the drummers with further percussion and at others, he picked up a bass — as on closing track “Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses” — to compete with the inexhaustible Flea on the low end. I hope to God somebody recorded this show. Read the rest of this entry »

Via Dead Air Space, Thom Yorke and a cobbled-together all-star band (including members of Beck’s Record Club — Nigel, obviously, and drummer Jerry Waronker — maybe a long-awaited Thom/Beck collab could be in the works?) will play at the Orpheum on October 4 and 5. The Radiohead frontman’s announcement after the jump.
