New Music: Jens Lekman – “The Summer Never Ends” Mixtape

It’s time to sip on the sweet nectar of DJ Jens’ summer jamz. While dude’s taste is immaculate, the best bit of this 30-minute set is the preview of a studio version of Jens’ “New Directions,” a track he’s been playing live that’s no less energetic here. Word is he’ll have a new album out in 2010 — this should help us pass the hours in between.

gkla mix: Tossin’ Enforcin’

If your heart isn’t beating 140 bpm by the end of this mix, I think there is something wrong with you. There’s basically nothing mellow about this one and, as you may notice from all the parentheses, it’s very electronic. Big-ass bass synths are the name of the game here, but of course I can’t resist a fair amount of silly stuff throughout.

gkla – Tossin’ Enforcin’: mp3

Heavy but not serious, the tracklist follows the jump. [Continue reading...]

Calvin Harris – Merrymaking at My Place (Mr. Oizo remix)
I’ve never met him in real life, but I bet when he sweats, Mr. Oizo oozes liquid joy.

Supersystem – Born into the World
This song’s been kicking around a couple years, but I’ve been spinning it lately and people always ask who it is. Now you know.

Thievery Corporation & David Byrne – Heart’s a Lonely Hunter
When he dies, I think we should bronze David Byrne’s body and make him a monument to which annual pilgrimage is required.

Parvati Khan – Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja
Bollywood? More like Ballerwood, amirite?

‘Lectric Workers – Robot Is Systematic
Something tells me that Daft Punk modeled their entire schtick after this song. It even contains the nonsense word, “technologic.”

Interpol – Heinrich Manuever (Paul Epworth Phones remix)
Mark Ronson – Stop Me (Dirty South remix)
So heavy.

Pase Rock & Diplo – The Motherfucking Rave Is Over This beat is so raw and awesome. You really can’t miss with James Brown samples.

Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Right Round (Like a Record)
I finished a set with this song the other day and Carman said, “That was a really gay set.” It’s a minor point of pride with me that I like gayer music than anyone else I know.

Gary Glitter/Sean Kingston – Hey Beautiful Girls (DJ Allen Bina mashup)
I’ll bet you anything that Sean Kingston’s Jamaican accent is not real.

Green Velvet – Shake & Pop
This track is just unbelievable. It’s about 7 minutes long and I have to hear it in its entirety every time. It’s so simple, yet it pays off so well with that refrain: “I like electro / I like retro / I like ghetto, house, and techno.” I swear, this song should be taught in Musicology of Dance Music classes.

Justice & Uffie – The Party (L.A. Riots remix) Justice – D.A.N.C.E. (Les Ryhtmes Digitales remix)
There’s this impulse with Justice tracks where you say to yourself, “Can’t we just bury this band already?” But someday, when their smashes aren’t the staples of every hipster bar in America, unknowing dabblers and naive newcomers will discover this enormously rewarding French electro duo and get blown away all over again. What I’m saying is: it’s a fine line between “played out” and “canonized.”

Klaxons – Gravity’s Rainbow (Van She remix)
I once heard someone say, “The only thing this band is good for is remixes.” Not so, but this is a pretty awesome remix all the same.

Spank Rock – Bump (Thunderous Olympians remix) (Back from Japan edit)
Wu-Tang Clan – Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nothing to Fuck with (Bird Peterson remix)
Jackson 5 – I Want You Back (Dre Skull remix)
Holy epic remixes.

gkla mix: summerize

Welcome friend to yet another gkla mix. I am very excited about this one; it is easily the best yet and you’re going to like it. I tried to keep it summery this time – bright, hot, celebratory – and I mostly succeeded, though the ending does get a bit dark.

Jackson 5 – “I Want You Back (Z-Trip remix)”
This one came out a couple years ago on the mediocre Motown Remixed comp, though this track is anything but. Z-Trip did this deconstruction at the height of his powers.

Next – “Too Close”
Besides the obvious novelty value of this 90s R&B standby (“The way that you shake it on me / makes me want you so bad – sexually“), also note the total recontextualization of the beat from Kurtis Blow’s “Christmas Rappin’.”

Daft Punk – “Something About Us”
Ah yes, one from the masters of this summer’s concert tour circuit – this ends the 100 bpm section.

The Human League – “Don’t You Want Me”
Breakup pyschodrama and a perfect singalong for the car, “Bohemian Rhapsody” be damned.

Frankie Smith – “Double Dutch Bus”
The first of a Missy Elliott sample twofer

Hot Streak – “Body Work”
The second

M.I.A. – “Jimmy”
Doesn’t it piss you off when your favorite song an album turns out to be a cover? This is M.I.A.’s English adaptation of Bollywood disco classic “Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja” from the forthcoming Kala.

Gary’s Gang – “Do It at the Disco”
What a song! This one came to my attention via Mr. Oizo’s “Patrick 122,” which I’ve used on other mixes. Flutes and xylophones reunited finally.

Gloria Estefan – “1, 2, 3 (Remix)”
May it never be said that I DJ without a sense of humor.

Calvin Harris – “The Girls”
So much cheek he must be British.

Feist – “My Moon My Man (Boyz Noise remix)”
I felt like I need to balance a song about girls with a song about boys.

The Rapture – “Woo Alright Yeah Uh-Huh (Simian Mobile Disco remix)”
This is where the mix starts to sound like nighttime agiain.

Basement Jaxx – “Where’s Your Head At (Ian Round remix)”
Ian Round detonates the original with a deceptively rich remix.

Justice vs. Simian – “We Are Your Friends (Scottie B., King Tutt and Samir remix)”
They forsake all the elements of Justice’s überremix but the vocals, which proves my original thesis that the entire appeal of “We Are Your Friends”= is the push-and-pull of a swing-feel vocal against a straight rhythmic foundation.

Bonde do Role – “Office Boy (Shir Khan remix)”
Go bells and blips!

Chromeo – “Fancy Footwork (Guns and Bombs remix)”
This remix has the odd characteristic of actually sounding like its remixers name. This is not a dance track; it’s a war zone. It also seems to cross the line from disco eruption to heavy metal track. I fail to resist the temptation to twiddle knobs as this one plays out.

gkla mix: Hearts Collide

Alright pirates, ninjas, monkeys and other kitsch characters, it’s time for another gkla mix from yours truly. After getting things popping with a little blog house, we do a brief tour de force in new (and old) wave and finish out with a hip-hop block. You have to peep the Dream Kids track I drop on this one; it is just amazing in so many ridiculous ways. The mix runs about as short as a Diddy party in the Hamptons, clocking in at a lean 37 minutes – but it’s 37 minutes of fire.

Dream Kids – “Pixelated Face”: mp3

If you dig it, check out some of my previous mixes.

Busy P & Justice: Good for Nothing

You should be thankful, Internet, ’cause I’ve got a gem for you today. Behold: in nearly 180 minutes of glory, a set spun live by the Ed Bangerites Busy P & Justice in January at Nitsa Club in Barcelona, Spain. The audio originally surfaced at gdfn.net and the set’s tighter than a vice grip.

Sadly, I couldn’t find a tracklist for this (although I know one exists somewhere), but among others they drop Daft, Spank Rock, Timberlake, the Ronettes, and of course, “We Are Your Friends.” Enjoy.

Busy P + Justice – Good for Nothing (live at Nitsa): mp3

By the way, is anyone else in favor of Gaspard & Xavier taking on a full-album remix of …And Justice for All?
