If you’ve caught LA Font live in recent months, you’ve probably heard them tear into “Lipsmack.” It’s the band’s best-yet marriage of artisanal melody and teenage blood, all frantic guitars and outsider angst. It’s due on the b-side of the L.A. act’s upcoming “Sharks” 7″, which you can pick up at the group’s Rawkblog-sponsored album release party at the Silverlake Lounge on Monday, July 11. Synergy! Enjoy the jam.
It is an honor and pleasure to announce our sponsorship of the second date in LA Font’s July Silverlake Lounge residency on Monday, July 11. It’s a free show, so whether you’ve had the band’s garage jams rattling around your headspace for months or you just need some new tracks to impress the cool kids on Turntable.fm, you have every reason to come and pick up group’s new “Sharks” 7”. As you’ll remember, I was in the studio with the band during the recording sessions — it’s a scorcher.
In the spirit of giving, the bill will also include Queen Kwon, the Ross Sea Party and chamber-rock should-be icons Ravens & Chimes. (A Waynestock mini-reunion! Maybe we can get Pepper Rabbit to help out on clarinet.) RSVP on Facebook and grab a live take on the single from the band’s Noise Coalition session below.
I’d be posting this for the obvious JAM content either way, but Waynestock rockers LA Font went ahead and made the weirdest, funniest video I’ve seen all year: there’s a rocket-powered dog, aerial photography, air guitars, ghosts, Sasquatch, knife-throwing, watermelons — the list goes on. Thoroughly satisfying stuff from the band’s debut album, which gets a follow-up 7″ in May. Bonus! Watch a killer live take on the single b-side, “Lipsmack,” after the jump. I had the pleasure of joining garage-rockers LA Font in the Village studios a few weeks back, where the quartet recorded their upcoming “Sharks” b/w “Lipsmack” 7″. The single, the band’s first on wax, is due in May from Sister City Records. I wish I could share the tracks with you — particularly “Lipsmack” — but since they’re still being mixed, you’ll have to come catch the band at Rawkblog and TwentyFourBit’s free, awesome Waynestock day party at the Liberty on Thursday, March 17. Free shirts from Etnies, free (and gluten-free!) snack bars from thinkThin and good vibes from Origami Vinyl, who are all sponsoring the event. Details and a free mixtape here and on Facebook.
Rawkblog pals/lo-fi heartthrobs LA Font played a few songs in bassist Greg Katz’s apartment for Little Videos over the holidays. All sound killer, though I’m sure the ladies would agree that the band’s much more handsome in person (they play Bordello with Gram Rabbit tomorrow night). Find three more songs over on Little Videos’ page and stream/download their free, ferocious debut album after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
It’s a funny thing to have seen a band live more often than you’ve heard their album — a circumstance that probably applies mostly to Phish fans — but such is the case with LA Font and its brand-new The American Leagues. The band’s been hard to miss if you live on L.A.’s east side and have left your house at night over the last few months, and its debut release is a strong document of their snarly in-person take on Slanted and Enchanted-style garage indie. The highlights here are many, but it’s a welcome surprise to hear the quiet moments — especially “Lone Wolf Boys,” the band’s answer to “Range Life” — burning as hot as the scorching rockers.
Full disclosure: Bassist Greg Katz is a Rawkblog alum and the band played my photography show over the summer. I asked them to do that because they’re awesome.
We’re still waiting on the band’s debut album (it’s in the mixing/mastering stages), but Rawkblog pals LA Font have issued a pretty rad t-shirt in the meantime. E-mail thelafontz@gmail.com to order one for a cool $15. Full disclosure: dudes are sending me one for free and like Tom Selleck (pictured at left), I will wear it with biased elephant pride.
On Friday, Origami Vinyl was gracious enough to host the opening night of RAWKSHOTS — my first photo exhibition. LA Font and Death Kit played to a packed house, drinks were had, parents got drunk, good vibes were spread. Let’s do this again soon, pals. (And by the way, my photos will be up and available for purchase at Origami all month.) More photos after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
