First Look: Ryan Adams – “Orion”

Ryan Adams’ Orion, in three words: sci-fi, Danzig, awesome. In more words: it’s actually pretty metal, and sounds better/funnier for the fact that he recorded it in 2006, at the height of his crazy Internet: Fuck Yeah phase. Certainly riffier than the Sad Dracula stuff he was doing at the same time. Tracks such as “Disappyramid” are both hilarious and heavy — and isn’t that what metal’s all about? I rate this album \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ 1/2 out of \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/.

Ryan is one of my favorite artists, but something is just missing with his last few releases. He needs to get back to his Cold Roses/JCN/29 type material.

Dude, I agree. Ryan is the shit, but the man needs to bring back the good shit.

Well I hear ya.. but as always.. it’s all subjective.. I consider “Orion” to be the good shit as well.. I mean again it kind of comes down to personal preference.. I realize a lot of Ryan’s fans aren’t fans of Metal or Hardcore Punk and ONLY like and prefer his more “Alt Country”(god I hate that term)  material.

I personally love everything he’s done, I think a lot of people think him playing PUnk or Metal is out of character or him just joking around which obviously is inaccurate seeing as he’s always been a Metalhead & Punk Rocker long before Whiskeytown. Those are his roots. So it’s actually really natural for him and he does it incredibly well. And probably because I grew up on all that shit too is why I have a real appreciation for Orion. When I listen to that record, it just sounds like a Ryan Adams record to me.. Great songs, I mean he not only has one of the most beautiful & melodic voice/tone but as well has a great aggressive voice/scream. All in all I just really dig his versatility which really suits my diverse musical tastes. But again to each his own right? Cheers..
