First Look: Paramore – “Brand New Eyes”

Paramore - Brand New EyesReasons Not To Like Paramore:

1) They are prominently featured on the Twilight soundtrack.
2) They held listening parties for Brand New Eyes at Hot Topics across America.
3) They just co-headlined a tour with Jimmy Eat World.
4) They are played on modern rock radio.

Actual Reasons Not To Like Paramore:
1)

Dudes, I’ve long since stopped believing in the idea of a “guilty pleasure.” Regardless of ’00s poptimism, it’s an almost inborn inclination among the indie set to recoil from anything that’s too popular. This is fucking stupid. Did you stop eating ice cream cones because you discovered tiramisu? Did you stop listening to Grizzly Bear when they had a track on the New Moon soundtrack (because they do as of today, ZOMG!)? Music is music. Divisions (and “cred”) are for insecure 15-year-olds understandably looking for social groups they can relate to. But, grown-ups, can the rest of us please move on?

Paramore’s Brand New Eyes, the follow-up to their stellar Riot!, plays into plenty of modern rock tropes, and on an initial listen, you might get hung up on the standard-issue guitar tones and aggro power chords, but arguably, no better act has come out of what’s left of “alternative” in the last decade. Unlike the pop-punk/jock-core acts they’re grouped with, the band plays serious songs, full of incisive, unpredictable songwriting shifts that turn on a dime thanks to the most dynamic rhythm section on the radio. But what pushes them over the top are the unreal vocals of 19-year-old Hayley Williams, a monster rock singer who could probably split open Axl’s dreads with the right note. On Eyes tracks such as “The Only Exception” (the best Coldplay song since Parachutes) and “All I Wanted,” she reveals a maturing sense of nuance that proves she, and the band, can do pretty as well as angry.

In short, the young band has returned with an album that proves them among the most promising acts in any genre. Heavy, catchy and start-to-finish exciting, I can’t imagine many people who give it an honest listen being able to avoid embracing it — guiltily or not.

(Brand New Eyes is out Sept. 29)

I knew paramore before they showed off in twilight. They are kinda a talented kid. I know that they still too young. But, they have spirit and, hayley is amazing girl. I donk know about the kind of music or something. But, they built their career from above before they nothing and they made a new breakthrough.

It may be true that they're relatively better than most pop on the radio, but that doesn't mean there isn't way better stuff out there. And god knows they're the ones who could use a bigger audience. Also, just as an honest question, do you think that being turned off by a band's image is a legitimate reason to not listen to them?

Its cool that you're trying to break through the indie snobbery and get people to realize that big-name acts can have talent, but it also seems like you're banking on some backlash-against-the-backlash points here. You've been on a lot of these teams lately.

    1) Is there? Within their genre, there isn't. If you're going to compare it to totally different music (say, Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, whatever), it's apples and oranges, but I think it's one of the best albums of the year, period.

    2) The only thing I care about is the music. Everything else -- image, marketing, residence -- is irrelevant.

    3) I don't care about backlash or backlash-backlash. I care about people paying attention to good bands. I'm too old to play those games.

Adam, I agree with you and note that concern in the review - the power chords, the guitar tones, etc. have the nasty stench of "awful mainstream rock" all over them - but less so than the last record. Rob Cavallo did a really great job on this one - it's nowhere near as compressed to hell as I was expecting, either.

But yeah, they're just writing better, more dynamic songs than the vast majority of pop acts and indie bands alike. Team Hayley!

I'm with you, Dave, but to be fair, I don't think our generation is disregarding Paramore because they're popular. I think it's more the high-gloss production and the fact that they are packaged and marketed TO BE popular.

It's the same reason most people are too blind to recognize that Taylor Swift really is a goddamn gem of a talent. Even if the "sound" of their music is researched to a tee, both Paramore and Swift write perfect pop songs, better than most of our real pop icons. I mean, "You Belong With Me" is just plain and simple a better song than "Single Ladies."

Keep pushing these kids. They deserve a bigger audience because 1) Haley's voice is amazing, and 2) They write better tunes than most of the indie-shit we typically listen to.

    Awesome.

I'll definitely give it a listen when it comes out.
