Explosions in the Sky at Sasquatch! 2009

We’ve seen of Montreal and Girl Talk‘s sets from last weekend’s Sasquatch! Music Festival at Washington’s epic Gorge. Below, the best of the rest — Explosions in the Sky, Nine Inch Nails, Passion Pit (who I shot myself on Friday — photos on the way!) and more. Thanks again to Rawkblog contributor Cayla McCrae for making the trek up north.

Live: Girl Talk @ Sasquatch! 2009

I can’t say I’m a Girl Talk fan — dude’s records might as well be Now! That’s What I Call Mash-Ups as far as I’m concerned — but Rawkblog contributor Cayla McCrae‘s Sasquatch photos of the guy’s show are just undeniably triumphant. Someday I, too, would like to fire toilet paper into a crowd while turning Elton John into a chipmunk. Check back later today for more dispatches from sweet Sassy molassy.

Rawkblog contributor Cayla McCrae trekked out to the Gorge in Washington last weekend for this year’s edition of the Sasquatch! Music Festival — a three-day event that saw the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Animal Collective, Bon Iver and more take the stage. In our first round of coverage, here are her shots of Kevin Barnes and of Montreal — click back this weekend for more.

Wavves Shitt The Bedd

I know this breaks my P4k/snark/Wavves embargo, but:

“Still unsatisfied more than 15 minutes into their scheduled 2:20 a.m. set time, [Wavves frontman] Nathan [Williams] finally succumbed to shouts from the restless crowd and began lifelessly strumming his guitar in what appeared to be totally random chord progressions.” — P4k boss Ryan Schreiber has obviously never been to a Wavves show before, and:

“But their performance last night on the Pitchfork stage at Barcelona, Spain’s Primavera Sound Festival was nothing short of spectacular… From the moment they took the stage, the duo was clearly not in any kind of mood to be playing to a potentially adoring crowd at one of the raddest independent music festivals in the world.” — AKA, “Totally not a conflict of interest, y’all! Btdubs, I’m chilling in Spain!”

Largo At The Coronet Turns 1

Hard to believe it’s been a year since Largo’s move to its new La Cienega location — I remember blogging about Aimee Mann’s opening shows there like it was yesterday. Longtime Largo mastermind Mark Flanagan talks about the success of the move, Jon Brion’s new video-assisted show and the Old Hollywood history of the new digs with LAist. (The best news: booze in the Little Room starting June 3, and even better, Jon’s live shows from the last 12 years [!] have all been recorded — and may finally start getting released, on vinyl.)

New Music: Boxharp (Scott Solter) – “The Green”

Scott Solter may not quite be a household name — or even a Brooklyn loft-hold name — but as John Vanderslice’s right-hand man at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone studios and the producer of albums by Rawkblog favorites such as the Mountain Goats, Division Day and Liam Singer, the now-North Carolina-based musician is long overdue for further recognition. He may get it for his latest solo project, Boxharp, a collaboration with wife Wendy Solter. The band is still looking for a label to release the disc, but we can hear “The Green” now. The song shouldn’t be a surprise to Solter aficionados — like Vanderslice’s latest, Romanian Names, “The Green” is crisp, keyboard-heavy and harmony-laden, but unlike his longtime collaborator’s music, Wendy sings out a whirlpool of melody, dissonant and disorienting. Looking forward to more. [Photo by JV himself]

Also: We were hacked yesterday. Much thanks to my web guy, Chad, for cleaning things up — looks like we’re OK now, but please comment if you smell anything fishy.

This Week In LA: Jens, Jens, Jens

Jens Lekman

And so much more. It’s going to be an intense week of show-going and decision-making in Los Angeles; I’ve got Jens Lekman at the Echo tonight and Harlem Shakes with Passion Pit at the Echoplex on Friday with Thursday still up for grabs (Jens again, St. Vincent or an early bedtime, depending on my constitution). My recs after the jump — who are you seeing? Read the rest of this entry »
