NME’s C86 Tape Remembered: An Aquarium Drunkard has a compelling look at the NME’s C86 tape, the 1986 compilation that’s typically credited with the birth of the treble-heavy post-Smiths, Sarah Records-era indie-pop scenes in the UK and beyond. They echo a number of my recent thoughts on the tape, mostly that the majority of its bands don’t sound twee at all — but no less interesting. At the least, they’ve saved me an essay, so go read up.
