Good job. Most critics' points aren't worth their comic book collection. They should be called out more often.

Hiya! Longterm reader, first time poster here - but I couldn't read a post about Ryan Adams (the unwitting love of my life) without leaving some sort of comment. Sadly I can't get access to the LA Times article - I say that, but it would only have made me irate anyway, I'm sure. On the one hand I love that the popular press don't take Ryan seriously as an artist because that means he's something special, sacred to us few in the know, but blatant fact-twisting and negative for the sake of being negative articles make me sick. Like Pitchfork's problem with him. Sure, Ryan is unlikely to ever release anything to match Heartbreaker or his work as Whiskeytown, but that's because it's as damn near perfection as music is ever going to get (in my humble opinion!!) and shouldn't detract from the greatness of later albums - particularly those with the Cardinals. The mainstream press don't like Ryan because he can be a princess, with his releasing a million albums a month and his erratic live shows. It's odd, because in lesser artists such behaviour is considered evidence of greatness!

Nah, Ryan probably would've used more explanation points and talked about being high. Which would've been awesome.

Greg, I spent so much time on the record sales because the Times article seems really focused on it, and Ryan's supposed lack of commercial success. It's not a very focused article to me - I'm not sure how they expect me to feel about him after, except that the writer seems to want him to put out one album a year instead of three. Which is ridiculous, because even though Cold Roses and Jacksonville could've been edited down, the aesthetics behind them are totally different. Same goes for 29. They all stand on their own as individual albums.

Otherwise you end up with Demolition, and that didn't turn out that great.

It is nice to ginally hear someone speak the truth about Ryan Adams. To many people focus on the supposed "drama" that surrounds him and don't even pay attention to the amazing music he is always pumping out. Thanks for the thoughful words!

yes, the article is unfair. whatever. at this point, the LA Times is just one more in the post-pitchfork wasteland of wannabe-edgy indie reviewers.

and why the hairsplitting about the record sales (by both you and the times)? didn't "pink moon" sell like 3,000 copies the year it was released?
